How to create the Danish Art of Hygge in your own home

Now that winter has well and truly set in, many people are cosying up by the fire in an attempt to ward off the cold. One way to banish the winter blues is to bring in the Danish concept of hygge, but if you have not heard of the term, what exactly does it mean?

Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’ or ‘hue-gah’) was originally a Norwegian word that meant wellbeing. In the 18th century it was adopted by the Danish and turned into a concept and way of living that suggests cosiness or togetherness, although there is no literal translation. Hygge can be a mood, a feeling, a state of being. It is the smell of your morning coffee, slipping into a warm bath, wrapping yourself in a cosy jumper, or watching the flames of a crackling fire.

The art of achieving hygge is to be mindful of the small things that give us joy. Hygge is especially important in the stark and cold Scandinavian winters, where there is very little daylight. Even in these bleak months, the people of Denmark are said to be the world’s happiest.

It is possible to hygge your home, which many Danish people do.

Here are our tips to create the art of hygge:

You can never have too many candles when you are investing in the art of hygge. In fact, Denmark and Scandinavia are said to be the highest purchasers of candles in the whole world. From scented to unscented, the warm flickering glow adds mystery and is considered to be one of the most fundamental steps towards creating the perfect hygge moment.

Curling up in your very own chair is an essential part of felling snug and comforted in a true hygge style. The more comfy the better, as this is not so much about style and what it looks like, but how you feel when you sink into it. A chair should envelope you in its arms, be firm enough to support your back and your neck, and allow you to nod off whenever you fancy.
