The Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow and British Coldplay frontman Chris Martin announced today that they are to split, after eleven years of marriage.
Subscribers to Paltrow’s online lifestyle magazine were the first to know, receiving an email simply stating ‘A note from GP’, which when opened read as an entry entitled ‘Conscious Uncoupling’ and had been posted earlier tonight. The journal entry quickly became unavailable as anxious fans tried to log on to read the message from the couple, and as of midnight tonight, it is still in hot demand.
The post read: “It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.” It went on to state: “We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.”
The post, which contained some 2,000 words, and was actually penned by Dr Habib Sadeghi, founder of Los Angeles integrative health center Be Hive of Healing, and Dr. Sherry Sami, was accompanied by a picture of the couple in happier times. It began with the statement: “Divorce is a traumatic and difficult decision for all parties involved—and there’s arguably no salve besides time to take that pain away, however, when the whole concept of marriage and divorce is re-examined, there’s actually something far more powerful—and positive—at play.”
The couple married in 2003 and went on to have two children, a daughter Apple, nine, and a son seven-year-old Moses. The announcement comes after a series of interviews the actress gave last year in which she defended her marriage against the numerous rumors that were circulating about her and her husband. She told Good Housekeeping last summer that marrying the Coldplay frontman was the best decision of her life, but she was also upfront about the struggles they have faced together, speaking to Glamour UK last year she said: “It’s hard being married. You go through great times, you go through terrible times. We’re the same as any couple. I’ve learned more about myself being married than anything else. I hate to say, ‘We’ve got it worked out,’ because you never know what’s going to happen, but we laugh, we’re good friends, we like to do the same stuff.”
In an interview back in September with the US breakfast show Good Morning America she did hint further that all was not perfect in the Martin/Paltrow household, saying that marriage was not always easy and she and Martin got over their “big ups and downs” by “laughing it out”.
The announcement follows recent rumors of Paltrow allegedly having an affair with entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn. The rumor gathered pace on Whisper, an anonymous secret sharing app, after Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter made an announcement that he would not publish an “epic takedown” of Paltrow.
