Choosing A Vacuum Cleaner to Suit Your Needs

Housework. I don’t pay it much attention really. But there comes a time when even I have to face up to reality and when it gets to the stage that I cannot remember what colour the carpet is, I relent. And get the vacuum out. My vacuum cleaner at present is an upright but over the years I have switched from this type to a cylinder and vice versa. But which is best for your needs? Whether you are living in a tiny bedsit, or a huge mansion, buying a vacuum is an important purchase as it is something you will be using on a more or less daily basis. And these days they do not come cheap. So what should you be looking for? Follow our handy tips and make sure you buy the right vacuum cleaner for your home.

Upright or Cylinder?

I find that upright vacuums are best for larger homes with not much clutter as typically they are a little harder to manoeuvre around items of furniture. Their good points are that they are easy to push and do not require much effort if you have large expanses of areas to clean. They also come with lots of accessories such as hoses and different types of brush heads. Bad points are some can be quite heavy to carry upstairs and stair cleaning can be problematic as they are cumbersome to fit on the actual stairs. To solve this problem many manufacturers have fitted longer length hoses so you can rest the cleaner at the foot of the stairs or on the landing. Cylinder cleaners are good for smaller homes where you have to move around many items of furniture. They tend to be more lightweight than upright cleaners but require a little more elbow grease to actually push against the carpet in order to clean it. They are good for stair cleaning as typically they are smaller than uprights and can rest on the actual stairs whilst you are cleaning them.

Bagless or Bagged?

This is a bit of a no brainer as many uprights and cylinder vacuums now are bagless and I have found that the suction you get with a bagless vacuum is tons better. There has been a lot of research developed into making a bagless vacuum; Dyson for instance invented the first bagless vacuum and now many manufacturers are coping his design as it has proved to be so successful. Plus you have not only the cost implications of having to buy new bags when you run out, there is the green factor of throwing them away and the bags ending up going into landfills. You also should consider that if you have a relatively old model of vacuum cleaner, you may find that you cannot source the bags as the company may no longer exist.

Wet or Dry?

In my experience, it is best to buy a good quality bagless dry vacuum and not bother with a wet cleaner. First off, none of the wet ones ever match up to a steam clean you can get by hiring in a team of professionals. And secondly, you’ll find that you will put in a lot of effort for minimal results. Cleaning your carpets with a shop bought wet cleaner is not worth the expense, or your time. I have used the best models and I have found that all they do is lightly soak the surface of the carpet in a cleaning solution and then try and suck it back up. What I want in a wet cleaner is for the cleaning solution to be absolutely driven right down into the fibres of the carpet and then drawn up so that the carpet is almost dry. You will never get this with a shop bought wet cleaner. So my advice is not to bother. Instead, buy a good quality bagless dry cleaner so that when you eventually want your carpets steam cleaned, there will not be too much ground in dirt for the professionals to have to deal with.
