Captain America – 2011: The Story

If you haven’t seen this film yet then book your tickets and go as soon as you can, for Captain America is surely the best superhero movie to come out of America in the past decade. So what’s the story? In the present day, researchers in the Arctic discover a cylinder object with a red, white and blue motif. Now it is March 1942, and Nazi officer Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) and his men invade Tønsberg, Norway to steal a mysterious tesseract which possesses superhuman powers. Back in New York City, a sickly but determined Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is frustrated at being rejected yet again for military service. Whilst attending an exhibition of future technologies with his friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) Rogers tries again to enlist. Everything changes when Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci) recruits him for the secret Project Rebirth after seeing Rogers commit an act of self-sacrificing bravery. Rogers then undergoes the experiment and his scrawny body is enhanced into the maximum human potential. The night before the treatment, Erskine reveals to Rogers that Schmidt underwent a previous version of the treatment, and had terrible side-effects.

When Dr. Erksine is then immediately assassinated by Heinz Kruger (Richard Armitage) an agent of Schmidt’s HYDRA organisation, Rogers pursues and captures Kruger but the assassin commits suicide with a cyanide capsule before he can be interrogated. Now Erskine is dead and the super-soldier formula lost, U.S. Senator Brandt (Michael Brandon) uses Rogers as a propaganda tool for the war effect, rather than for actual battle . In Italy 1943, while performing his duties, Rogers learns that his friend Barnes and his unit was lost in battle against Schmidt. Rogers will not believe that his friend is dead and mounts a solo rescue attempt with Carter flying him behind enemy lines. Rogers manages to find and free Barnes and the other captured soldiers and whilst doing so confronts Schmidt who reveals his face to be a mask, removing it to display the red, skull-like face that earned him the name, the Red Skull. Schmidt escapes and Rogers returns to base with the freed soldiers.

Rogers then recruits Barnes and others to attack the other known HYDRA bases. Rogers and his new team successfully find and destroy many HYDRA bases but during one attack Barnes is killed. The final HYDRA base is located and Rogers leads an attack to stop Schmidt from using weapons of mass destruction on American cities. Rogers locates Schmidt’s jet and climbs aboard as it takes off but during the flight the tesseract’s container is damaged and Schmidt touches it which causes him to burst into a bright light. The tesseract has burnt a hole in the plane and the plane is now crashing towards the earth with the weapons onboard. The only way Rogers can avoid the weapons detonating into the earth is to crash it in the Arctic. Stark later recovers the tesseract from the ocean floor but is unable to locate Rogers or the aircraft.

Rogers now awakens in a 1940s-style hospital room but something is not right. He rushes out into what seems is modern day Times Square where Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) tells him that for the past 70 years he has been asleep.
