James Franco, Seth Rogen & Muppets spoof Vogue cover as backlash continues against Kim Kardashian

You wouldn’t think that a magazine cover would cause such controversy and divided opinion, but little did Anna Wintour know that’s exactly what did happen when she decided to feature reality star Kim Kardashian on the front cover of Vogue.

Kim appeared alongside her fiancé Kanye West, wearing a strapless wedding dress, designed by Lanvin, complete with a whopping 15-carat diamond engagement ring. And the pairs appearance seems to be all the more contradictory to Ms Wintour sense of style and high standards, as the editor for US Vogue has been quite vocal in the past on her dislike for couple; only recently it is understood that she was instrumental in getting the pair banned from what is considered to be the highlight of the fashion year, the Metropolitan Costume Institute Gala.

It appears that despite Ms Wintours initial reluctance to associate herself with the Kardashians, the reality star’s rapper fiancé orchestrated a very public campaign to ensure his future wife ended up on the front page. West somehow got an invite to Wintour’s house and managed to persuade her that Kim was one of the most influential women on the planet right now, even beating Michelle Obama in the fashion stakes. Wintour eventually conceded defeat and hence the April cover was born.

And so was the backlash, with normally reticent A list stars such as Sarah Michelle Gellar suddenly having a voice tweeting: ‘Well I guess I am cancelling my Vogue subscription, anyone with me?’ Ms Gellar wasn’t the only one and with hashtag ‘boycottvogue’ trending social media sites were absolutely buzzing with disgruntled protests.

Ms Wintour had, it seemed, already anticipated a reaction to her controversial choice, and wrote an open letter to her readers, which said:

“You may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancée on cover, he did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.” She added: “There’s barely a strand of the modern media that the Kardashian Wests haven’t been able to master, and for good reason: Kanye is an amazing performer and cultural provocateur, while Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world’s spotlight, and it takes real guts to do that.”

And for the first time the magazine included the hashtag -#worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple, perhaps in acknowledgment of the importance of the what social media now creates our celebrities.

In the meantime, spoof versions of the now infamous cover have already started to appear, with even more famous celebrities taking to emulate the couple’s pose. They include the Muppets and ‘This Is The End’ good buddies James Franco and Seth Rogen. Clever James photo-shopped his and Seth’s heads onto the happy couple’s bodies with many of their followers admiring this version of the Vogue cover more than the original.

As for Kim, she appears to be more excited about her actual appearance than the backlash from readers, tweeting to her 20 million followers: This is such a dream come true!!! I can’t even breath!”

Legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz photographed Kim and Kanye, and pictures also include the couple’s daughter North.

Kim Kardashian is one of Robert Kardashian’s daughters, the defence lawyer who worked for O.J Simpson. Kim came to the public’s attention when a sex tape was ‘leaked’ to the media in 2007. The reality show ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’, a show where the family’s luxury lifestyle is put under the microscope is now a global success and the sisters have also released several clothing lines and jewellery ranges.
