Perhaps dropping to 135lbs for his role as Ron Woodroof in his new film The Dallas Buyers Club has had an effect on 43 year old Matthew McConaughey, as he is now launching his very own exclusive menswear collection. But don’t worry, it’s not for skinny types, it is in fact an all-weather active-wear men’s clothing line called JKL, and it is available at Dillard’s right now.
The actor turned designer, said that he was inspired by his own healthy and sporty lifestyle when it came to designing his new line of casual and functional men’s clothing, and the collection includes polo shirts, jeans, chinos and board shorts.
McConaughey has named the new menswear collection after a charity he started up with his wife Camilla back in 2008, called Just Keep Living, which helps to promote after-school wellness programs based at inner-city high schools. And in keeping with the actor’s charitable nature, he has stated that a portion of the collection’s sales will go to the Just Keep Living foundation.
Matthew McConaughey spoke to WWD and explained why he decided to launch an active-wear range for men: “I like to be able to wear something that is appropriate for wherever the day takes me: to work, on a hike and then out to dinner,” he added: “I like to take the formality out of the day’s schedule and be ready for any off-road detour.”
So far the JKL range features clothing with all-weather durability, such as items that are made from waterproof materials, that include velcro closures and have UV protective fabrics to protect from the elements. The price range of the JKL ranges from around $29.50 to $89.50, so unlike some celebrity collaboration, McConaughey has made sure that it is an affordable option for most consumers.
When McConaughey was brainstorming for ideas for his new brand, he said he came up with a catch word that perfectly represented the style of what he wanted the type of clothing to stand for. He wrote down: “From the jungle to the opera,” but he admitted, “That’s a bit of an exaggeration, but that’s the idea.”
And the father of three seems to be enjoying his sojourn into the fashion industry so far, stating: “This is my first adventure into the fashion world. I’m enjoying it so far. I like working on the details, the design, the marketing. And I think the JKL philosophy is what makes it unique.”
