A healthy New Year: The fitness gizmos to help you meet your resolutions

For lots of us, a New Year means a new drive to get fitter and healthier. But, improving your wellbeing, and your figure, doesn’t necessarily mean a gym membership any more. There are lots of new gadgets to help you meet your targets. Here are some of our favourites…

Last year, we had the Fitbit Ultra but, for 2013, the wireless fitness tracker has been updated to the more wallet-friendly, and funkier, Fitbit One. Coming in a range of vibrant colours, the Fitbit Zip is water-proof for those of you who still exercise in the rain. It can be worn on your waistband, clipped onto a shirt or just tucked inside your pocket. Fitbit tells you how many steps you’ve walked each day, how many miles you’ve covered and how many calories you’ve burnt. A little Fitbit smiley face illustrates at a glance how fit you are by either smiling or frowning at you.

Aiming to fit in with the trend for wearing wristbands for all sorts of charitable causes, for friendship, or just because they’re cool at the moment, the Nike Fuel Band hits the mark when it comes to styling. The FuelBand tracks how active you are day-to-day, rewarding you with more NikeFuel the more you do. You can set yourself a target for the day and the FuelBand lets you know how close you are to reaching your goal through LED lights which go from red to green.

Another one designed to be worn on the wrist, this is a bit of a departure for Jawbone, which is best known for its Bluetooth-enabled audio gadgets. A comprehensive all-rounder, there’s a pedometer which encourages you to hit your pre-set targets, a sleep tracker which also has a Smart Alarm function to wake you up at the optimal time in a half-an-hour window, and nutritional monitoring to keep track of your diet.

With a modern, yet retro feel, this gizmo is not only stylish and comfortable to wear, but it stores an amazing amount of information, letting you see all the data from your recent runs along with personal bests. If you need a little extra motivation, you get messages like ‘Run with me later,’ and there’s a great feeling when the watch buzzes to let you know you’ve beaten one of your personal bests.

With so many different gizmos on the market to track your fitness, it can be difficult to choose. But Motorola’s offering is great for those who are already fairly active but need a bit more encouragement, along with a way to record workouts.
