Ideas for Floral Living Room Designs
With the New Year well under way, thoughts turn to new designs, to bringing a fresh look into a home, or a room, and
giving everything bright new feel. Floral designs have been a hot choice for the past few seasons. There is something timeless about floral designs, they can be slightly retro – think 1930s and 1950s – and if they are done well, floral designs can perfectly accent any contemporary home.
Firstly, you need to decide which floral look is for you. Think about how the room is furnished. You can use floral designs in a big way and make that the main focus of the room. Upholstering furniture, such as sofas, with floral designs will make a really bold floral statement. However, this can be expensive so you need to be really sure that you want that look, and that you will still want it in a few years time. Experiment by draping a piece of floral fabric over a chair or sofa. Live with the look for a while and see if you love it, or if it is a bit too much.
Another major look is achieved using floral designed wallpaper and matching colours. Try using a computer program to see how you like that look in your room. A general – and somewhat obvious – rule of thumb is, smaller patterns are better in smaller rooms, and larger patterns in larger rooms. Matching the colour to paint work and other elements in the room will create a very coordinated look. So think all this through as you look at floral papers.
Also bear in mind what else you may like to have on your walls. If you have a collection of art or photographs then plainer walls may be a better choice. Using paper on one accent wall or two walls can work very well. The floral design can be very bold because it does not surround you. One papered wall can be very striking, and this will also reduce the cost if the design is expensive.
If you want floral design to be a more modest statement in the room, then look at using floral accessories. These can work really well bringing a fresh new look at relatively small cost. By adding floral accessories to a living room you will instantly create a relaxed, summer country-side feel. Look at cushions, throws, artwork and even stand alone art pieces. A basic, crisp off white paint scheme can look wonderful with the addition of a floral still life on the wall and few floral cushions on the chairs. You could even make these yourself from remnants or vintage fabrics. And if you like to ring the changes then you might have a set for spring/ summer and something different for autumn and winter.
Florals are such fun, and bring something charming to a room, so experiment and enjoy a bit of ‘back to nature’ decorating!
