Types of Skylights

There are many different styles of residential skylights to create the right look for any home.  From acrylic dome over polycarbonate, glass, and polycarbonate, the perfect skylight can be purchased to suite any room.   Many home owners even find health benefits when they add skylights to their home.  Residents receive more sunlight during the day and they also receive more fresh air while they are inside.

Before purchasing a skylight, it is important to be aware of the different shapes and styles.  Home owners typically purchase a flat style skylight.  Flat skylights come in a rectangular or square shape and they can be opened from the inside.  Deck-mounted units are preferred for new installations on pitched roofs or sloped roofs.  These skylights are mounted through the roof deck and are lower profile but are beautiful inside a light shaft or cathedral ceiling.  Curb-mounted skylights are installed on a wooden curb on the roof.  These skylights are used on flat or low-sloped roofs and also long, steep roofs that receive heavy rain fall.  Curb-mounts can be installed horizontally or vertically.

Things to Keep in Mind

There are a couple of things to consider when choosing skylights for homes.  First of all there are many types of skylights so the consumer needs to make sure that it will fill all their needs in the given space in the home.  Also, the consumer needs to be aware of the size in the room and determine the right size for a roof skylight.  Many times people make a mistake and they get a skylight that is too big.  Keep you location in mind because some areas have quite a bit of sunlight or heavy rainfall.

After choosing the perfect skylight, the location and direction for installing the skylight needs to be determined.  Research how to maintain skylights because without proper upkeep to make sure there are no leaks.  Skylights are a great addition, but careful thought needs to go in to choosing the right skylight to make sure it is right for your home.
