Pretty for Pennies: Decorating your Home on a Budget.
Having your own home is a wonderful feeling, whether you rent or own. But the ability to put your own stamp on it and make it yours is important to feeling like you belong. Moving, however, is an expensive nightmare and you may not have the budget available to overhaul the entire house immediately. That’s why these tips on decorating on a small budget can come in handy.
If you need or want to repaint but can’t afford high-quality brand-name paints, consider buying big tubs of plain white paint from DIY shops. If you buy their own-brand paint you shouldn’t have to pay too much, and a roller and rolling tray can be bought for a few pounds at your local hardware shop. White may be boring, but it beats looking at a flaking wall or simply feeling helpless to do anything at all!
If you have a little bit more money and want some convenience, the Dulux Paint Pod is actually worth the expense. While you do pay around thirty pounds for the smallest model, and while the paint intended for the Paint Pod is a bit more expensive than regular paint, you save immense amounts in terms of drips and spills and can expect to coat a wall without using a great deal of it. Do bear in mind that the cleanup takes some time, but considering the amount of money you end up saving in terms of wasted paint, you may find it worth the hassle if you have large areas to cover.
If you long to have some stylish vases or other knick knacks sitting about but can’t afford to buy them, consider making
your own. Shops such as Home Bargains or ordinary supermarkets may sell reasonably-priced silk flowers, glass beads, and candle holders. Remind yourself that less is more, which is also easy on the pocketbook, and don’t be shy to use a champagne flute instead of an expensive vase – it will look charmingly quirky on your sideboard.
Lastly, if you want a bold design in your room but can’t afford expensive patterned wallpaper, consider buying just a single roll and using wallpaper paste to attach it to a few canvases, which can be bought cheaply at your local craft shop. Simply hang them up and bring the boldness of the design into the room without spending hundreds on wallpaper for an entire wall or room.
With a few adjustments, you can make your home into a beautiful place without spending the earth. Focus on making it into a home and later on you can always decide to carry on more expensive conversions.
