Keep it Enclosed
A backyard isn’t going to be a fun place if all the time you spend in it is used worrying about your children and pets and keeping a close eye on them. You can increase your comfort level about your little ones being in the yard simply by adding a fence. Not only will this keep your children and pets inside, where they belong and where you can see them, but it will also keep out unwanted intruders. Fences can be very expensive to install, but if you choose the right materials, you can get away with installing a fence without spending too much money. Opt for wooden, not aluminum or vinyl, fences. These do require upkeep, but they cost next to nothing to put up and, if you’re skillful (or brave!) enough, you can even tackle the job yourself. In fact, make it a fun family project and get everyone involved.
Grow a Garden
You don’t have to have a lot of fancy equipment to have a great backyard. Something fun and super affordable you can do as a whole family is to plant a garden in your backyard. Seeds cost hardly anything, but the fun you’ll have getting them in the ground and then watching them sprout is well worth it. Taking care of a garden is also a wonderful way to teach kids responsibility. Plus, if you plant seasonal fruits and veggies in your garden, you’ll have an abundance of free, delicious, and very healthy produce to choose from without having to make a trip to the local grocery store.
Add in a Picnic Table (or Area)
Having a picnic at the local park is a lot of fun, but having one in your own backyard is even better! If you feel like splurging, purchase a nice, sturdy picnic table for fun in the sun. The craftier can try making one of their own or, if you really want to save some cash, just bring out old card tables that won’t get hurt by being placed outdoors. You can even create a picnic area–table or not. Just spread some old blankets on the ground, cover if necessary, and voila—you’ve got a fun and free place for your family to enjoy meals, snacks, and most importantly of all, conversation and bonding time.
Live a Little:
If you can afford it, there really is nothing wrong with an occasional splurge from time to time. So, if the kids have been begging for a swing set, a trampoline, or a swimming pool, now is the time to give it to them. If you do, just make sure you have a talk about safety and proper use of the equipment. Also, you can usually find these types of things in the “free” section of Craigslist or through a great organization called Freecyle.
