How a Pre-decorated Christmas Tree Changed My Holidays

I am not the biggest fan of Christmas. I hate the long queues and the massive number of people milling about and fussing over cheap plastic toys, made by a sweatshop halfway across the globe. But it’s the joy of giving you say, still it’s a highly commercialized venture (that deserves another post altogether).

I hate the annoying carols and the silly measured, sing-song melodies and the words that don’t even make any sense at all. I hate trudging about in knee-deep snow just to cut up a tree to make the rest of my family happy (although a big, roaring chainsaw is one of the coolest things I’ve ever done). I hate the decorating, the chores and all the cleaning up afterwards. That was until last year.

Need a Christmas Tree? Hire One!

It was on that note that my girlfriend (now, my lovely fiancée) cheered me up over the holidays last year. I’d never heard of the service but it was enough to get off the couch and prowl around with a badly dinged-up laptop and Google.

These services have been around longer than I’d thought. The idea really is to ring up one of these companies and they’ll show up on your door with a big, proper (and I do mean PROPER!) tree and they’ll decorate it for you. It comes in a nice big pot and starting at a ridiculously low price, it’s almost wrong not to get one.

Why You Should Hire a Tree

Bear with me on this one, I know the idea is silly enough as it is but for starters, these rented and pre-decorated trees are incredibly cleaner than our standard Christmas trees. They come in pots and so they don’t dry up. They don’t shed as badly as your eight-month old fur child. There are hardly any needles to pick up off the floor let alone, trigger a big vacuuming session.

I hate decorating with a vengeance and there’s really a long, long list of things I would rather do than spruce up a giant, lifeless green hulk on the weekend before Christmas. These rent-a-trees have been a boon for the artistically challenged people all over the country. Simply pick one off that matches that snazzy new couch you’ve just splurged your bonus on and you’re golden!

Finally, they’re the environmentally responsible thing to do. These companies can give you the same tree for a few years and you can actually see it to grow. When it hangs up the ribbons and decors for good, it’s transplanted in the wilderness to bear a tenth of your carbon footprint. If I’m honest, I can’t wait to see my tree again next year.

Even if you think global is a myth, these handy little services are worth the cost of driving up to the woods. And yes, they are THAT cheap. Have you rented a tree before? Tell me more in the comments below!
