BodyShaper: Cellulite Cream That Actually Works?
It’s created quite a storm in Australia, where four tubes of the stuff are bring sold every minute, as desperate housewives are grabbing stocks from the shelves of their local chemists. But it doesn’t come cheap, at £49.95 this is the latest wonder cream that promises to banish the cellulite from your thighs and other parts of your body. The cellulite cream, called BioElixia Bodyshaper and developed by Phosphagenics Ltd, an Australian biotechnology firm, has had minimum advertising but word of mouth, possibly the best press it could ever hope to receive, has propelled it to best seller status as women have flocked to buy the stuff. The problem with most cellulite creams is that they do not penetrate deeply enough into the layers of the skin to become effective, but this cellulite cream has a specific ‘delivery system’ that allows active ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin than its competitors.
The scientists behind the cellulite cream discovered this delivery system whilst attempting to develop patches for patients suffering from arthritis and cancer, as they were looking to deliver painkillers behond the skin’s layers. Here they applied the similar techniques they had learnt to target cellulite, by delivering certain compounds under the skin to address the unsightly orange peel effect. The BioElixia Targeted Penetration Matrix works by ‘opening up the pores within the skin, allowing active ingredients to pass through the top layers of dead skin, into the epidermal and dermal layers where live cells are’, claimed Dr Esra Ogru, who is the CEO of the Australian company who patented the cellulite cream. Once the cellulite cream has reached its designated areas, the ingredients in the cream, which include caffeine and forskolin from mint and lavender, get to work by blocking the uptake of fat, and starving the fat cells which in turn shrinks them.
The makers of the cellulite cream are pretty confident that you can see results of a reduction of your cellulite by almost 40 per cent in 28 days. In trials, 30 women who were told they were testing a new moisturiser, said that they saw a visible reduction in cellulite in their thighs after using it twice daily for eight weeks. The scientists looked at images of the women’s thighs with state of the art computer digital photography to analyse the before and after pictures. The tests revealed that the bumps, ‘orange peel’ dimples and bulges associated with cellulite were reduced by an average of 38 per cent in 28 days. And it appears that if you use the cellulite cream for longer, you will get better results as the scientists saw that the appearance was even better after eight weeks, with an average 57 per cent reduction in cellulite. Even skin hydration and elasticity were also improved by 20 per cent and 24 per cent, respectively. One lady who used the cellulite cream had this to say, “I’ve been using this for 28 days and am pleased to say that there is a noticeable difference – I have a small patch of cellulite on the back of each thigh, and I have applied this as directed and ‘knuckled’ it in… My skin in general is more toned and the cellulite is now barely visible. I am going away and will be a lot more confident in my swimsuit as a result of using this!”
Dr Esra Ogru, who is a molecular biologist, is not surprised that the cellulite cream works, as this is the first product to be developed which actually penetrates into the layers of skin where live cells operate. She says, “As a scientist and a female I was very sceptical about anti-cellulite creams. We did a huge trial – looking at the most expensive creams to those at the bottom end of the market and discovered that 99 per cent of them didn’t go through the skin at all, instead they simply sat on top. BodyShaper is unique because we used TPM – the successful delivery system we created for getting painkillers through the skin for people with chronic pain from arthritis and cancer – and applied the same technology to cellulite. TPM is made up of Vitamin E, which has been through a chemical process, which works by opening up the pores within the skin, allowing the active ingredients to pass through the top layers of dead skin, into the epidermal and dermal layers where the live cells are, without compromising the skin barrier or irritating it.” The cellulite cream has the scientific research of the delivery system of the pain-killer research behind it, as Dr Ogru points out, “BodyShaper was three years in the making, but our 12 years scientific experience and £100million investment in TPM for the pain relief market is the key to its success,” Dr Ogru adds, “It’s the first time science has been used to directly target the fat which causes cellulite so I’m not surprised that the women who’ve used it have seen amazing results. It’s all about getting those active ingredients to the right part of the skin and letting them do their stuff.”
