The clever way the fabric is printed gives you slimmer looking curves by contrasting a darker shape outside and a lighter curve inside the dress. This gives the illusion that you are slimmer than you actually are as the darker colour then blends in with your background. Total Colour Block
We don’t mean wearing colour blocking the usual way by contrasting two different colours together. When we say total colour block, what we mean is to take one colour and just wearing that shade on the top half and bottom half of your body. What then happens is that your eye is tricked into only seeing one long and lean silhouette. The shape is not broken up by the body, instead you naturally follow the colour all the way down the outfit. Good colours to try this effect with are monochrome and primary colours such as red, blue or yellow.
If you are bordering on a larger size, do not go for huge geometric or flowery prints. They tend to over emphazise your curves and are not flattering to your overall shape. Instead, opt for tiny little prints as your eye will then be drawn to the pattern in the print, before it looks to the overall body. Your eye will want to see exactly what is in the print so the smaller the better.
Create a Waist
No matter how big you are, if you create a waist you are going to give the illusion that you are smaller than you actually are. This is because your body will look in proportion to itself and look balanced to other people. If you do not have a waist to speak of, try wearing clothes that have a peplum skirt attached to them, such as skirts or dresses. You are looking for something that’s going to create the illusion of small and wide. The way the peplum is cut is that it kicks out at the hip, giving you just what you need to make the waist look smaller. This then creates this illusion of a smaller waist and hips.
Certain eras in fashion suited certain types of body and the 50′s were synonymous with stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth. Both were a healthy size 16 and curvy ladies. Hence the clothing for that time in history will flatter a larger body. Look for anything that accentuates the waist, like 50′s styled cut dresses that are fitted snug at the bust but fuller on the hips. These tend to be more flattering on fuller figures. And stay away from skirts that go below the calves.
