Cruise Control? Tom Cruise Fights Divorce from Katie Holmes
The notoriously private Hollywood star Tom Cruise has stepped into the fight against Katie Holmes as his lawyer Bert Fields revealed his client was ‘deeply saddened’ by the news of his marriage break up and he added, “It’s not Tom’s style to do this publicly.
He is really sad about what’s happening.” Giving a statement to BBC Radio 1′s Newsbeat, Fields would not provide specific detals of the divorce, but used the opportunity to redress the balance between the negative publicity Cruise has been getting recently. He told the press, “Tactically we can’t say where Tom will file a divorce case and if he’ll be seeking joint custody of Suri.”
Many believe it it Katie’s fear of Cruise’s dedication to the religion of Scientology and the effect it may have had on their six-year-old daughter Suri. However, sources close to the pair have come forward and denounced this, saying that ‘[Katie] was totally committed to Scientology. She had enthusiasm for it and would voluntarily and gladly participate in it when Tom was off shooting movies.
This is not a fight over religion. It’s being used as a way to hurt Tom.’ Fields says his client will file a rival divorce case but will not reveal where and also revealed he’s allowing Katie Holmes’ legal team to ‘play the media’ before allowing Cruise to tell his side of the marriage breakdown. “We are letting ‘the other side’ (Katie and her team), play the media until they wear everyone out and then we’ll have something to say.”
If the divorce is not about the problems regarding the cult religion, what could have prompted Katie to seek a divorce? Other theories point to Cruise’s control over the 33 year old actress, citing the way he acted ‘like a puppetmaster making every major and minor decision in her personal and professional life’, claims sources writing for TMZ.
And friends close to the actress add that ‘In the end, she [Katie] felt like she couldn’t breathe without his permission.’ Rumours abound that during the promotion of the film Thank You for Smoking, in which Katie starred with Aaron Eckhart, back in 2005, Cruise stopped any pubilicity shots where the co stars were seen engaged in kissing or ‘anything else compromising.’
He was also controlling her during the time she appeared in the film Batman Begins, insisting she flew in his private jet, rather than fly with the rest of the cast. Although you can perceive from this what you will; perhaps he was flying a jet to the set and wanted her to fly with him, seems an acceptable notion? Wouldn’t you prefer to fly with your partner?
One thing that is odd about the whole divorce preceedings is the military style operation Katie seems to have taken with effect to get away from Cruise. It appears that she had been planning it for several weeks with the help of her father Martin Holmes. Katie changed her cell phone numbers and email addresses and even moved into a new apartment building, under the excuse that she wanted underground parking to escape the media attention.
But right up until last week she was still playing the role of Tom Cruises’ loving wife, in touch with him on the phone saying ‘I love you’, a source told People magazine. Sources close to her stated, ‘Her inner circle has been planning this and switching out cell phones since she was in China [in mid-June]. When new cell phones arrived, then nobody could reach her. Her old best friends from last week don’t have her new number, no e-mail. She’s unreachable.’ Her father even fired some of Katie’s assistants and hired new ones to help with the switch over.
It is thought that the Mission Impossible star’s first priority will be to get temporary visitation rights to see his daughter Suri and then decide where the divorce case will be heard. Katie has filed for the divorce in New York because she believes she has a better chance of winning sole custody, and Tom will be encouraged to file in California, where they both lived, however, the law states that divorce cases cannot be filed in separate states at the same time. Cruise will want to show the courts his extensive documentation to prove that Los Angeles is where the case should proceed, because this is where he says they have lived. It’s going to get messy…
