My Top 5 Unusual Hotels of the World
Palacio de Sal – Bolivia:
This isn’t one for those of you worried about your cholesterol for the simple reason this hotel is made completely out of salt. What the Norwegians did with ice the Bolivians have done with salt. The walls, floors, ceilings and many of the decorations are made of the stuff.
All sixteen rooms are constructed to resemble igloos and guests can expect to even have their beds made out of salt. This truly is a unique hotel and definitely worth a visit for anyone looking to break away from the norm.
Montaña Mágica Lodge – Chile:
At first glance the Montaña Mágica Lodge doesn’t appear to be that unusual after all is has all of the facilities of a regular hotel; a conference hall, restaurant, bar etc except for one little thing…all of this is situated in a giant man made mountain that just happens to have a waterfall spilling out of the summit.
Situated in the middle of the forests of southern Chile lies the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, which is where this hotel can be found. The whole ambiance has been created with nature and relaxation in mind.
The Hotel is in possession of the idyllic Lawenko Spa where guests can expect to find numerous relaxing therapies and treatments such as hot stone massage and a milk and honey bath. This is an ideal location for anyone looking to escape from the hum drum of everyday life.
Utter Inn – Sweden:
Ever gone to Sea World and thought “you know what…this would make a really nice hotel”? Well that is exactly what the creators of this hotel have done except they have gone one step further and situated their hotel in the middle of Lake Malaren, Sweden.
From the mainland, visitors will only be able to see a small, traditional Swedish red house floating on the surface of the water; little do they know that underneath is a hotel like no other.
Guests at this hotel can sunbathe, swim, watch the fish (both from the surface and from their bedroom windows) and also take canoe trips to the surrounding islands.
Baumhaus Hotel – Germany:
Now this hotel is the ultimate ‘big kid’s’ dream.
Essentially this hotel is made up of five two-storey tree houses which are each situated eight to ten meters up a tree.
Situated just outside the town of Görlitz this hotel has been an instant success. Each dwelling is decorated in a crazy rustic style, think log cabin decorated by Tim Burton if you will; with off angle windows, odd shaped beds and not a straight wall in sight.
This is a hotel sure to entertain the whole family.
As well as being completely zany and off the wall, each tree house is decorated in accordance with local myths and traditions which adds to the somewhat unusual charm of the place.
House in the Clouds – Britain:

House in the Clouds – Karen Roe
Anyone who is a fan of the film ‘Up’ is going to love this next location as House in the Clouds is no ordinary holiday home. No this holiday home is situated seventy feet in the air.
Nestled in the Suffolk countryside the House in the Clouds casts a striking silhouette to onlookers. With a spacious five bedrooms, three bathrooms and kitchen there really is room for the whole family; there is even a games room to keep the children amused.
So if you’re looking for a holiday close to home but still want to break away from everyday life then this ideal for you.
