Samsung Bike Week – Sat 16 June – Sun 24 June 2012

Get on your bikes so the famous saying goes, and as this week is the Samsung Bike Week, it is more relevant than ever. All over the UK events are being set up to celebrate anything on two wheels, from perusing old bicycles to the latest in techno advancements.
The basic message however is to get on the back of your bike and join in with hundreds of other like minded enthusiasts and get riding. Samsung Bike Week, the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event, is taking place across the UK 16th – 24th June 2012. Almost half a million people are taking part and you can join in too.
Find an event near you by using our Event Search tools. Samsung Bike Week events offer something for everyone; from families, schools and companies, to seasoned cyclists and those who have never cycled before. Samsung Bike Week is an annual opportunity to promote cycling, and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone’.
Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, whether this be for fun, as a means of getting around to the local shops, school, the library or just to visit friends. As the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK, Samsung Bike Week encourages over half a million people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.

Museum of Science & Industry Manchester - Bring your bicycle (penny farthings, choppers, tandems or even brand-new mountain bikes all welcome), dress stylishly (we’re thinking tweed more than Lycra…) and bring a picnic. If the weather is fine (you never know…), we’ll sit outside and watch the steam trains.
You can also see a fantastic collection of bicycles, from the uncomfortable boneshaker and penny-farthing to the latest racing bikes, as well as our impressive range of planes, trains and automobiles. The Museum Of Science & Industry can be found in what is the oldest passenger railway station in the world. The museum boasts displays which chronicle the development of the modern railway system that we use today.
There is also an interactive science gallery for both young and old to enjoy. You can also see our fantastic collection of bicycles, from the uncomfortable boneshaker and penny-farthing to the latest racing bikes, as well as our impressive range of planes, trains and automobiles. Rollapluza Youth Championship - Free for kids to enter and exciting for spectators to watch. Popular back in the 1940s and 50s bicycle roller racing has been brought bang up to date by the Herne Hill based Rollapaluza team. Participants race on stationary bikes over short-timed distances with a clock face displaying how the race unfolds. Every rider will get a timecard and top times will take them through to ‘head to head’ knockout rounds. It all builds to four big finals at 4pm in the under 12 and under 16 boys’ and girls’ categories. With top prizes up for grabs this is not to be missed!
