3 Natural Remedies to Treat Oily Skin

Oily skin can leave you feeling insecure and uncomfortable in your own skin, plus it can lead to other problems such as acne when the oil clogs your pores. There are plenty of ‘treatments’ available but many of them, such as over-the-counter cleansers claiming to reduce oil, are simply too harsh. They certainly get rid of oil, all oil… you end up with dry, itchy skin and that’s not a good look either.

So how to achieve that perfect balance?

An excellent solution is to try some all-natural remedies you can find in your kitchen to help you to treat your oily skin! My favourite three are listed below…

Lemon Juice

This is a fantastic natural remedy for oily skin and acne too. Simply apply a small amount onto a cotton bud and dab it over the affected area before you go to bed. Then when you wake up you should wash your face as normal. Lemon is a great anti-bacterial and will zap those bacteria before they have a chance to cause spots! It also calms inflammation so it great for angry, red skin – but it does sting so it’s definitely not recommended for broken skin! Additionally, lemon juice can be used to make a homemade face mask. To do this you should combine a teaspoon of lemon juice and an egg white and massage it gently onto your face, then leave it to sit for approximately 10 minutes. It removes excess oil to leave pores clean and clear.

If pure lemon juice is too harsh for your skin (everyone’s skin is different, so it’s a bit trial and error) mix one part lemon with two parts water or moisturiser for a gentler but still very effective solution

Honey

This natural ingredient is excellent for treating acne as it can help to eliminate excess oil to clean and clear your pores. A honey face mask is my favourite – you can use pure honey alone as a gooey but fantastic face mask, or it can be mixed with other ingredients such as yogurt. These face masks will work deep down into your pores to absorb the oil to leave your skin feeling clean and revitalised. Oatmeal is also great at absorbing oil so why not mix a spoonful or two in with your honey for a gently cleansing, softening scrub?

Cucumber

Cucumber can be used as a natural treatment for oily skin as it helps to reduce the inflammation caused by acne. To use cucumber on your skin, simply slice fresh cucumber, lie back and pop them on your face, then relax for approximately 20 minutes. This can help to sooth and calm the skin to reduce inflammation. Alternatively, you can create your own face mask by blending one cucumber with some dry oatmeal and plain yogurt. You can then spread this mixture evenly over your face and let it sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing off thoroughly. This homemade face mask is excellent for absorbing excess oil and calming skin that is irritated!

Do you know any other natural ingredients that can reduce excess oil?
