Say what you like about Mrs Beckham but that lady can sell a dress or two! Her new collection of bodycon dresses have proved to be so popular on Net a Porter that the site has already sold out of all sizes. Incredible when you think that these are dresses priced at a not so reasonable £1,450 a pop each. So what is it about the ex Spice Girl that makes her such a fashion hit with the high-end style market? I think it has something to do with the instinctive way she takes a trend and, to utilise a commonly used phrase – ‘makes it her own’. For instance, take colour blocking, all the rage at present but VB doesn’t do normal colour blocking, no, she will take the highest quality blends of silks and wools and use these textures to create her blocks of colour. She will then stage the blocking and produce an elegant silhouette that flatters the woman’s figure so beautifully. Her clothes make you feel more beautiful when you wear them and in a designers world, this is quite rare.

As for statement dresses, you only have to look at VB’s evening gowns and wonder out loud as to where this lady gets her inspiration. The minimalist touch of these dresses, coupled with the gorgeous feel of the silk and wool blend crepe material, adding to this the cute little details of two tiny front pockets is simplicity and breath-taking. And buyers agree as despite the hefty price tag of £2,450, all but the size 6 has sold out in the turquoise and tangerine colours. And we love the attention to detail at the back with a daring double zip which means you can create a split as high as you like. As for lunch date dresses and office staples, VB has these covered in abundance. She has taken fresh bright colours, think lemon yellows and pale peach, and created elegant cotton blend dresses with a chic silhouette and pleated skirts. I particularly love the use of braces which look fabulous and not out-of-place even on the statement gowns.

VB did not always get it so right however, with her balloon type ‘cocoon’ style dresses which you can see her customers are not fans of as they have not sold out. It appears that anything which makes a woman look more feminine, more shapely and enhances the natural curves is completely de rigeur this season and is set to last for many more. And it is to this end that VB excells. Not only does she use the finest materials in her designs but she appears to have the knack for dressing women to their best advantage. Something I’m afraid to say that male designers often lack, or appear to not want to do. And it just goes to show that in most cases with clothes, simplicity is best and less is definitely more.
