When beauty and fashion collide
Luxury Italian fashion label Emilio Pucci is best known for its signature covetable kaleidoscopic prints.
Pucci, a dashing Florentine aristocrat began his fashion career unexpectedly on the ski slopes of Zermatt in 1947 when a photo of a ski suit he’d designed for a female friend found its way to the pages of Harper’s Bazaar.
Going on to open a boutique on the exclusive island of Capri in the late 1950s, Pucci revolutionised resort clothing with his exuberantly coloured prints, which soon became popular with style icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy. His silk jersey dresses, exquisite evening dresses and resort-style sportswear soon became must-haves for the jet-set crowd.
With Pucci’s daughter Laudomia at the reins, the family firm formed an alliance with French luxury group LVMH and is still soaring on the international fashion stage.
While French perfume house Guerlain, one of the oldest in the world, is held in similar esteem so it’s no wonder there’s such a buzz surrounding the announcement that Guerlain and Pucci have joined forces to create a new make-up collection.
With high performance formulas, packaging emblazoned with the iconic Pucci print and the make-up inside designed in Pucci-style swirls of colour, the new products are sure to become A-list favourites.
The pair are describing their new collection as a celebration of a “glamorous and colourful summer” with “accents of the Italian Riveria”.
The guiding thread throughout the collection of eleven products is a motif inspired by an iconic print from the Pucci archives, Winter Capri, a blue flower interlaced with swirls and flames.
From burnished bronzers to terracotta-toned glosses and nail varnishes in summery shades, the Terra Azzura collection has been designed to illuminate the dullest of complexions, creating a glow across the skin.
The standout star is Guerlain’s revamped Météorites Perales D’Azur, which has been formulated to even out and correct every skin tone with a combination of six colour pearls.
Then there’s the Terracotta powder which is a hybrid powder, halfway between a blusher and a bronzer, which has a gentle lightweight formula.
The collection also features eye shadow, a bright blue mascara, eyeliner in an intense indigo, three shades of lip gloss and two new nail polishes.
With all the packaging, including mascara and brushes, designed in the Winter Capri print, it’s a set that you’ll want to get out to touch up your make-up in public.
The Terra Azzurra collection, which starts at £17 – so even those of us who can’t afford Pucci’s Haute Couture can own a little bit of the designer’s creativity – has launched at House of Fraser before hitting beauty counters nationwide in the UK in June.
The collaboration is already massively popular in the US, with Saks limiting customers to six purchases from the collection at any one time. And items from the new range are already hitting the likes of auction site ebay, selling for as much as four times more than in store.
So anyone who wants to get their hands of a bit of Guerlain/Pucci glamour had better be quick.
