OMEGA SEAMASTER – the deep sea diving watch
Omega watches and timepieces were begun in 1848 by a young 23 year old named Louis Brandt, but when he passed away his two sons named
Louis-Paul and César took over, and eventually moved the Omega brand to Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. When they died, they left the company to Paul-Emile Brandt, who through fantastic investment moves kept Omega at an even keel with Rolex even. Eventually a restructuring of the Omega Company was necessary, and Omega is now manufactured by the Swatch Group.
Through brilliant advertising campaigns, such as placing the Omega Seamaster on James Bond in all of the 007 films, Omega has been able to raise their market share in direct competition to the watches sold by Rolex. The Seamaster watch is now used for those who go deep sea diving, thus it fits in very well with the James Bond image. This is why Omega has associated itself with the movies since 1995. Not surprising was that in 2002, it was the 40th James Bond anniversary, thus they made a commemorative “super spy” edition of the Omega Seamaster. The dial actually had a 007 logo on it, and even the clasp had 007 inscribed upon it.
Interestingly enough when used as a deep diving watch, the Seamaster has a helium release valve, just as it was utilized in the James Bond movies. Granted his watch also did a lot more than just release helium.
Because Omega has often been linked and sponsored many of the Olympics, it has been named the official timekeeper for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Thus there is now an Olympic edition of the Seamaster, called the Planet Ocean. It has a beautiful steel bracelet, but has a black face, and they have hired the multiple gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps as their Omega Ambassador. He of course wears the Seamaster Planet Ocean on his wrist!
Today the Seamaster collection for women includes the Aqua Terra Automatic, The Aqua Terra Jewellery, the Planet Ocean Chrono, and the Planet Ocean, as well as the Aqua Terra Quartz, and the 300 M. For men the Seamaster collection includes the Ploprof 1200 M, Planet Ocean Big Size, Planet Ocean Chrono, Planet Ocean, Aqua Terra Quartz, Aqua Terra Mid Size Chronometer, Aqua Terra Chronometer, Aqua Terra Annual Calendar, 300 M Chrono Diver, 300 M Chronometer, Aqua Terra XXL Small Seconds, Aqua Terra Chronograph, 300 M GMT and finally the 300 M Quartz.
Currently there are many Omega connoisseurs, who have saved their Omegas throughout the years. These same connoisseurs have saved the advertising that has been done by Omega through the years, and thus even when Omegas have been worn in outer space, to the various journeys that have plumbed our underwater experiences, the Omega Seamaster is still considered one of the best precision performances available in a watch. Although many items in our world have received complete reengineering the Seamaster has basically stayed the same throughout history giving it a timelessness that still delivers the durability and the extraordinary precision that is an Omega product.
