Celebrity fitness regimes are big business. From the days of Jane Fonda asking us to “make it burn”, to the celeb fitness journeys of Jordan, we love to learn about how celebs get their picture perfect bodies. There are some celebrities though who have taken fitness to the next level whether it is in preparation for an acting role, or for their own requirements.
Madonna – Extreme Exercise Every Day
Madonna has gone from fitness fancy to fitness freak in a few short years. She credits this to yoga, Pilates and even horse riding on the weekend. The star says that she never takes a day off exercising and lives on 800 calories per day, which is completely contrary to all Olympic athletes who always use rest days as part of their training regime. Has Madonna taken it too far? She also includes daily injection of her vitamins. Vitamins?
Linda Hamilton – A Terminator Body
No one can forget this celeb’s ripped body in 1984’s ‘Terminator’. Hamilton embarked on an extreme fitness routine that was unheard of for women in the 1980s. Training started at a minimum of 5 hours per day and included cardio workouts with running, swimming and cycling as well as perfectly planned sessions with free weights. Linda hired an Israeli commando for military training and authenticity for her role.
Edward Norton – Bulk Up for On Screen History
From skinny choirboy to pumped up extremist, Edward Norton had to undergo a massive change in just three months. This kind of routine involves food as well as exercise and the star had to overload on a protein only diet as well as endure a gruelling exercise routine that focussed on building bulk as opposed to lean muscle. Three months work to gain 30 pounds of muscle is almost unheard of and could be dangerous without medical supervision.
Beyonce – 20 Pounds in 14 Days
Not only is this a crazy diet, according to the experts but it could be potentially harmful to your long-term metabolism. Beyonce went on the “Master Cleanse” in preparation for her role in Dream Girls. The celeb lived on maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water for a fortnight.
Jennifer Anniston – Baby Food Diet
Jennifer Anniston has always maintained a strict exercise routine, but has recently admitted that her extreme weight loss is due to eating baby food as a meal replacement. Experts agree that it while it may help you lose weight quickly, it will also do some damage in the end.
Natalie Portman – Starving Swan
Natalie Portman and her co-stars had to lose a massive amount of weight before the filming of “Black Swan”. The actress ate small portions of fast metabolizing food items and started training a year before filming. Losing this much weight puts a strain on your vital organs, and many ballet dancers struggle with anorexia and bulimia to keep their weight down.
Jessica Simpson – Dukes of Hazardous Diet Plans
To tone up and trim down for her role as daisy duke this singer put herself on the 5-factor Diet which only lets users eat 1300 calories a day and combines a fully cardio workout each day of the week. The star lost 20 pounds in just two weeks, and joins a number of celebs who swear by the 5-Factor.
Christian Bale, from Hot to Not and Back Again
The star who has had the most radical transformation though is Christian Bale. For his role in The Fighter, Bale had to lose 60 pounds until he was skeletal and emaciated. The star did this by running for over 4 hours per day and severely restricting his intake of food. It’s not the first time Bale has starved himself for a role. He lost 63 pounds; a whopping 30% of his entire body weight for his role in the Machinist. He then bulked up again for Batman. The star admits that this sort of regime is not healthy and that no one should attempt the extreme regimes or diets stars use to prepare for a film role.
